I Choose...

Christian Marclay as the artist featuring in my final paper. He was born in 1955 in California. Marclay is a visual artist and composer in New York, exploring the jujuxtaposition between sound recording, video, photography and film. He studied at the Ecole Supérieure d'Art Visuel from 1977 - 1980 in Geneva, Switzerland. From 1977 - 1980 he studied sculpture at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. He also studied as a visiting scholar at Cooper Union in New York in 1978. Christian Marclay was a visiting professor of video collage and sound at theEuropean Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, where he conducted an Intensive Summer Seminar. His solo art exhibition includes Video Quartet, Nasher Museum of Art ar Duke University, Durham, N.C. (2009); Christian Marclay, Paula Cooper Gallery, New York (2008); Honk if you love silence, Musee d'Art Moderne et Contemporain, Geneva (2008) and many more. In 2012, Time Magazine listed him as the World's 100 most influential people.

The Clock, a work he produced in 201o, had hit a public affection. The 24 hour video was combined with different scenes cut from many occasions. News reports, movies, TV shows, etc, making the 'movie' an accurate time piece. This art installation had won the Golden Lion award at the 2011 Venice Biennale. Because of this piece of art, the Daily Beast had also ranked him one of the 10 most important contemporary artist. Here is a short clip featuring a part of the art.

When we were assigned to search for a contemporary artist to write our final paper on, I started my research on Google. What I typed on the search toolbar was 'famous contemporary artist'. There was a few names on a journal of Daily Beast: The 10 Most Important Artist of Today that triggered my curiosity, which are Christian Marclay and Marjetica Portc. The reason why they stood out among those 10, was that only the two of them uses video and 'design' as their medium of art. As I still have little knowledge about these strangers, investigate more on thm is essential. Later on,  I found out Marclay is a visual artist, whereas Portc is an architect. Although both of their major art work--- The Clock and Dry Toilet are eye-catching, I noticed that Portc's work are more difficult for me to understand. At that moment, I instantly decided Christian Marclay will be the one, in the mean time, the Time magazine was also read.

Dry Toilet
The Time Magazine listed him the world's 100 most influential people! This is even a stronger reason than that curiosity he triggered upon me. I believe despite The Clock, there are more masterpieces which make him come to this stage of fame. Therefore, he becomes my target artist to be written in my final paper.
